Tuesday nights at Trinity Lutheran Church are quickly becoming something special.
Our Jaguars Community Organization Open Gym, held every Tuesday from 6:00–7:30 PM, continues to be a space where kids, families, and volunteers come together to move, create, and connect—and the January 13 open gym was a perfect example of what this community is all about.
Despite being a weeknight and just after the holiday break, the gym was full of energy, laughter, and familiar faces—along with several new ones.
A Night That Was “Hoppin’’
On January 13, we welcomed around 35 participants, with over 20 kids actively engaged throughout the night. Kids ranged in age from just 2 years old all the way up to 14, and every corner of the gym had something happening.
Volleyball quickly became the main event, with kids lining up on the sidelines, eager for their turn on the court. Games ran nearly the entire session, led by our coaches and supported by volunteers who made sure everyone felt included—whether they were experienced players or just trying it out for the first time.
At the same time, basketballs bounced, footballs were tossed, and music filled the space, creating an atmosphere that felt energetic but welcoming.
More Than Sports
While athletics are a big part of open gym, they’re not the whole story.
For kids who preferred something quieter—or just needed a break—our art table and game stations were busy all night. Volunteers set out art supplies, including washable, skin-safe pens that quickly turned into fun, temporary “arm tattoos” for many of the kids. Board and card games like Uno, Chutes and Ladders, and Apples to Apples gave kids another way to connect and play together.
Healthy snacks were available for all participants, making sure everyone had fuel to keep going.
Kids were free to move between activities at their own pace, choosing what felt right for them—and that freedom is intentional. Jaguars Open Gym is designed so every child can participate in a way that feels comfortable, safe, and fun.
Welcoming Faces—New and Returning
One of the most exciting parts of the night was seeing 7–8 new participants join us, many connecting with returning families and volunteers on the sidelines. Conversations flowed easily, kids cheered each other on, and the sense of belonging was unmistakable.
We start every open gym with a group introduction to welcome new faces, and we close each night by thanking everyone for showing up and sharing when the next event will be. These small moments help turn a busy gym into a real community.
Growing With Purpose
As Jaguars continues to grow, so does the work behind the scenes. We’re excited to welcome Camila, our new part-time Executive Assistant, who is helping with event communication, follow-ups, and making sure families and volunteers feel supported before they even walk through the door.
This growth reflects something we’re proud of: people want to be here. They come back. They bring friends. They tell others about the space we’re building together.
Be a Part of the Community
Tuesday nights at open gym are about more than sports—they’re about showing up for one another.
If you’re reading this and wondering how to get involved, there’s a place for you here:
- Attend an upcoming open gym
- Volunteer and be part of the experience
- Follow us on social media
- Support our work through donations, which allow us to keep these events free and accessible for all families
We’re also sharing moments from past celebrations, including our Christmas and New Year’s events, because being part of this community means being there for the moments that matter—during the holidays and every week in between.
Thank you to our coaches, volunteers, families, and supporters who continue to make Jaguars Open Gym a place of movement, mentorship, and belonging. We can’t wait to see you next Tuesday.
